"Digital Arrest" Scams — No Such Thing Exists In Indian Law

One fact ends this entire scam the moment you know it: no Indian agency has ever had the power to arrest anyone over a video call.

What this scam looks like

A call or video call — often on WhatsApp or Skype — claims to be from the CBI, police, customs department, narcotics bureau, or a court, alleging you are personally involved in a serious crime: a parcel addressed to you containing drugs or illegal items, your Aadhaar linked to a money-laundering case, or similar. You're told you are now under "digital arrest" — that you must stay visible on video, cannot hang up, cannot contact anyone, and must transfer money immediately to "clear your name" or avoid physical arrest. Callers often wear uniforms or sit in front of official-looking backdrops to appear credible, and the call can continue for hours.

Why it works

The scam combines two powerful forces: the authority of law enforcement, and total isolation — victims are explicitly instructed not to consult family, friends, or a lawyer, which removes the one thing that would normally break the spell. Fabricated documents, fake case numbers, and uniformed "officers" add layers of apparent legitimacy, and the sheer unfamiliarity of the concept means many victims don't immediately recognise it as impossible.

The fact that ends this scam: "Digital arrest" is not a real legal process anywhere in Indian law. The police, CBI, ED, customs, or any court cannot arrest you, investigate you, or resolve a criminal case over a phone or video call. No genuine agency demands money transfers to "clear your name," and none of them instruct you to isolate yourself from family. If you are on a call like this, the call itself is the proof it's fraudulent.

Any call claiming you're under investigation and must stay on video continuously
Being told not to hang up, not to contact family, or not to consult a lawyer
Demands for money transfers to avoid arrest or "clear your name"
Uniformed callers, fake ID cards, or official-looking backdrops shown on video

How to protect yourself

Hang up immediately — you are not required to stay on any call, regardless of what you're told. No real investigation is compromised by ending a phone call and verifying independently. Call 1930 to report it, and if you want to verify any claim about a parcel, case, or legal matter, contact the relevant department directly through their official number, not one given to you during the call.
