Fake Bank Support Accounts on Social Media โ UPI Risk
Searching for your bank's customer care online can lead you straight to a fraudster's inbox instead.
What this scam looks like
You have a genuine banking issue โ a failed transaction, a blocked card โ and you search social media or Google for your bank's customer care number. You message an account that looks official, with the bank's logo and a plausible name. A "support representative" replies quickly, asks for your UPI ID, PIN, or asks you to share an OTP "to verify your identity" before they can help.
Why it works
Fraudsters create social media accounts and comments that mimic real bank handles closely enough to pass a quick glance, and they specifically target people who are already frustrated and searching for help โ meaning victims come to them, rather than the other way around. The urgency of a real banking problem makes people less likely to scrutinise who they're talking to.
Red flags to watch for
- Any support account asking for your UPI PIN, OTP, CVV, or full card number โ banks never ask for these
- Support handles found via a general search or comment section rather than your bank's official app or website
- Slight misspellings or extra characters in the account name or handle
- A "representative" offering to resolve your issue directly over chat/DM rather than directing you to official channels
How to protect yourself
Only use contact details listed on your bank's official app, official website, or the back of your card. Never trust a support handle found through a general search or a reply left under an unrelated post. No genuine bank representative will ever ask for your PIN, OTP, or CVV under any circumstance โ treat any such request as confirmation of fraud, regardless of how official the account looks.
