Fake Trading App Scams โ Profits That Only Exist On Screen
The numbers going up on your screen are the product being sold to you โ not evidence that your money is actually growing anywhere.
What this scam looks like
You're added to a WhatsApp or Telegram group, often through a social media ad or a "friend" you met online, promoting a stock or crypto trading app with an expert "mentor" sharing daily tips. You're guided to install an app โ sometimes outside the official app store โ and deposit money. The app shows your investment growing rapidly. When you try to withdraw, you're asked to pay "taxes," "processing fees," or a larger "unlocking" deposit first โ and the group or app eventually disappears entirely.
Why it works
The fabricated profits shown in the app create a powerful sense that the opportunity is real and working, making people willing to invest more before ever attempting a withdrawal. Group dynamics โ seeing others post "profit" screenshots โ add social proof, even though those posts often come from the same operation.
Red flags to watch for
- Trading apps installed outside the official Play Store or App Store
- Guaranteed or unusually high, consistent daily/weekly returns
- Any request to pay a fee, tax, or deposit before a withdrawal is released
- Recruitment through unsolicited social media messages or WhatsApp groups rather than a regulated broker
How to protect yourself
Only invest through platforms registered with SEBI (for stocks) or recognised, regulated exchanges (for crypto), and verify registration independently rather than trusting claims made within the app or group. No genuine investment platform requires you to pay a fee to withdraw your own money.
