Instant Loan App Harassment โ When Small Loans Turn Predatory
The loan amount is often small. The permissions the app asks for first are where the real damage begins.
What this scam looks like
An app promises instant, no-paperwork loans, often to people who wouldn't easily qualify through a bank. During installation, it requests broad access to your contacts, photos, and messages. After disbursing a small loan at extremely high interest and hidden charges, the lender demands early repayment, then contacts your family, friends, and coworkers directly โ sometimes with morphed images or threats โ to pressure repayment, regardless of whether the original loan terms were fair.
Why it works
These apps target people who need money quickly and may not qualify for formal credit, offering fast approval with minimal checks. The broad permissions granted at installation give the operator direct leverage โ access to a borrower's real contacts โ that legitimate lenders never need or request.
Red flags to watch for
- Loan apps requesting access to your full contact list, photos, or SMS messages
- No physical address, RBI registration, or verifiable company details listed
- Extremely high processing fees or interest disclosed only after you've already agreed
- Repayment demands arriving well before the agreed due date, with threats attached
How to protect yourself
Only borrow from RBI-registered NBFCs or banks, which you can verify on the RBI's official website. Never grant a loan app access to your contacts, photos, or messages โ a legitimate lender has no operational need for this. Read all fee and interest terms before accepting any loan offer.
