Ponzi & Crypto Investment Scams โ€” Guaranteed Returns Aren't

Every legitimate investment carries risk. The moment someone promises you a fixed, guaranteed return, that promise itself is the red flag.

What this scam looks like

A scheme โ€” sometimes branded around crypto, sometimes around agriculture, chit funds, or "exclusive" investment clubs โ€” promises a fixed, unusually high monthly return, often introduced by someone you know who has "earned well" from it. Early investors are paid out using money from newer investors, not from any real underlying business. As long as new money keeps coming in, it looks legitimate โ€” until it collapses, and most participants lose their entire investment.

Why it works

Trust from a friend or family member who's already "profiting" is one of the most persuasive forces in these schemes, often more convincing than any marketing material. Referral bonuses actively encourage existing participants to recruit others, spreading the scheme through social trust networks rather than public advertising.

How to protect yourself

Be skeptical of any investment promising fixed, guaranteed returns โ€” genuine markets fluctuate, and no legitimate investment can promise otherwise. Verify that any investment scheme or company is registered with SEBI, RBI, or the relevant regulator, and be especially cautious of opportunities introduced through personal referrals with financial incentives attached.

If this has already happened to you

File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible โ€” the earlier a scheme is reported, the better the chance of authorities freezing remaining funds. Also see our "I've Been Scammed" page for further steps.
